An Important Message to the Parents of Young Children:

Pre-Orthodontic GUIDANCE PROGRAM

If the child you have in orthodontics treatment now has younger brothers or sister, or if you have a child between 7 and 9 years old, this information may be of help to you.

9-year-olds
in braces?
why?

Often children within a family will exhibit certain predictable patterns of growth in much the same way they inherit similar eye and hair color. Like other family traits, particular patterns of tooth and jaw development also “run in the family.” As a preventative orthodontic office, we like to examine children by the age of 7. Usually no orthodontic treatment will be needed at this time. However, by making use of early interceptive methods, or, in some cases, even before they occur, early evaluations can sometimes prevent the need to full braces later.

We frequently find that parents feel they do not need to have younger children examined by us unless their general dentist or children’s dentist makes a referral. We do not find that dentists recognize the same problems that we do, any more than we recognize some the problems that they look for in general dentistry. True, we are dentists, but the specialty of orthodontics is complex and is a large field by itself. Major orthodontic problems can be present behind perfectly acceptable smiles, and these problems, if left untreated, can severely jeopardize the health of teeth, gums, and jaw joints.

Some of the most prevalent problems include:

Teeth that are too crowded: These teeth are extremely difficult to clean, making them very prone to decay even with good oral hygiene.

Teeth that are too far apart: This condition, especially if caused by the early loss or extractions of teeth can result in healthy teeth tipping into the open spaces or becoming loose. Deterioration of the supporting bone may also occur.

Protruding upper or lower teeth: These teeth in addition the being unattractive, don’t meet properly during chewing and this can cause abnormal wear of the surfaces as well as excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue.

Misalignment of jaw joints: This may be a result of abnormal tooth position and can cause chronic headaches or pain in the face and neck.

Misaligned of jaw joints: This may be a result of abnormal tooth position and can cause chronic headaches or pain in the face and neck.

Habit such as thumb sucking can influence facial growth and development.

With these facts in mind, we hope you will have all your children examined by age 7 so that we can give your family the maximum dental care they deserve. In the interest of prevention, we are happy to offer all initial examinations are follow-up visits at no charge. I f you would like to take advantage of this office, please call our office or tell our Scheduling Coordinator. She will be glad to set up a convenient time for you.
